What Happens When You Realize You Have Asthma?

So, you got a second opinion and, yes, you have asthma. What's next? First, let your doctor help you get your symptoms under control. Stabilizing your asthma is important not only because you'll feel better physically and emotionally, but also so you can eventually rid yourself of asthma. Right now, however, I suggest you trust your doctor. Your physician knows what is needed to stabilize your asthma and put control back in your hands.

You may prefer not to use drugs, but if your doctor believes medication is best for right now, do as your doctor says. There are many people in this world who would not be alive today had it not been for asthma medicine. Medications, when appropriately prescribed, help far more people than they hurt. Later, once your symptoms have calmed down and you've learned what aggravates your asthma, then you and your physician can look at ways to control your asthma rather than having asthma control you.

The next thing you need to do is take a deep breath and relax. Asthma can be treated and controlled—even beat. View your asthma as a wake-up call that the body is not indestructible, that your body needs care and attention.
