How Important Is An Asthma Diet?

The importance of an asthma diet is often overlooked by many people, even asthma sufferers. The reason why this is so important is two fold; for one thing, many people have food allergies which can trigger an asthma attack. Secondly, monitoring food intake can greatly control the chance of attacks and their severity as well.

An asthma diet is not something to be taken lightly and should be done under the supervision of a certified nutritionist or a doctor. This is because there are certain foods or preservatives that are known to be asthmatic triggers and which can be avoided right at the outset. Apart from that, you don't want your diet to have an effect on any medication you are taking or vice versa.

The Food Journal

Food allergies are one of the biggest causes for asthma and exactly pinpointing what foods you are allergic to can make a world of difference to an asthmatic. The best way to deduce which foods you need to avoid is by following an asthma diet. Keep a food journal for yourself and make meticulous notes about exactly what you eat and how you feel afterwards; usually an allergic reaction will take a few hours to set in. It is also important to note that sometimes it is not the food itself but the preservatives that end up causing the asthma attacks.

Once you have figured out exactly what is triggering your asthma you can safely avoid them in the future. There are also some general diet tips you can keep in mind to further help control your asthma. Oily and spicy foods are notorious for starting asthma attacks so avoiding those are a good idea. Remember to drink as much water as possible and include a lot of whole grains, vegetables and fruit in your diet. Vegetarian food is more ideal for an asthma diet since it doesn't put an extra strain on your digestive system.

Diets For Children And The Elderly

When preparing asthma diets for the elderly or for children, there are a number of features one needs to keep in mind. In the case of children, it is important to remember that they burn calories much quicker than adults do. This means that they are also more apt to lose weight quickly. An ideal diet for a child should contain high amounts of protein and carbohydrates as well as vitamins and minerals. Spicy and oily foods as well as sour foods should be avoided as they can induce coughing. Make sure that meal times are fixed, with a wholesome breakfast and lunch and light dinner. Heavy night meals often trigger asthma attacks.

In the case of the elderly, the calorific intake is much lower so the diet should be adjusted accordingly. The most important thing to control is fat intake, since reduced physical activity means there is no way to burn excess fat. The diet should also be high in vitamins and minerals with strict monitoring to ensure that nothing in their diet has side effects. For all asthmatics whether they are young or old, a strict diet will do very little if the environment harbors harmful asthma triggers. Asthmatics should avoid being around smoke and people who smoke. Dust is another known trigger so it is important to keep the surroundings clean at all times. Keeping the area pet-free is another way to control asthma attacks. Remember that an asthma diet can only work best if other asthma triggers are also dealt with properly.
