Additional Healthy-Living Tips For Asthmatics
It is especially important for asthmatics to protect themselves from catching those nasty colds that cause so much trouble. By eating, exercising, and sleeping right, you strengthen your immune system to fight viral invaders. Like it or not, viruses are everywhere and they can't be avoided. The good news is that you can avoid most viral infections with a few simple steps.
Frequent hand washing is the best defense against infection. Infections usually begin in one of two ways: you either inhale germs from the air or pick up the germs on your hands and then touch your face. The bacteria then enter your body through the nose, mouth, or eyes, and the infection gets under way. This is why it's so important to wash your hands several times a day and keep them away from your face, especially after using the bathroom or touching other people, before eating, or after coming into contact with someone who has a cold. A simple habit like regular hand washing goes a long way toward keeping you and your asthma trouble-free.
My other suggestion is that you try to avoid people who are sick. This may be easier said than done, especially if you have children; however, when logistically and socially possible, try to avoid people with colds. If your significant other or spouse is sick, perhaps it's not a bad idea to sleep in a spare bedroom or couch for few nights. Kissing sick people is obviously not a good idea. If you find yourself in the company of someone who is ill, wash your hands immediately after the encounter and try not to let them touch you. Admittedly, this may seem a bit cold and impersonal; however, after explaining to your friends the trouble that the common cold can cause an asthmatic, they should understand.
