Child Asthma - Educate Yourself To Help Your Child
An asthma attack can be traumatic for a parent, especially in cases where the child is panicking. This is because, a child who panics during an asthma attack, usually suffers a debilitating attack. Parents of asthmatic children need to essentially educate themselves with causes and cures of asthma in children, so that they are actually able to help the child, instead of feeling helpless themselves.
Educate Yourself
Asthma can indeed be very traumatic, especially in case of children, as the very first attack that they suffer is indicative of the fact that there is a problem. However, parents must know how to keep their calm and realize that there is a lot that they can do to help their child to fight asthma back. There are plenty of medications available and there is also a lot of research available to educate the parents on what the causes and cures of asthma are. Although there is no permanent cure for the disease, there are various ways to ensure that the child stays in a good environment that goes a long way in making an asthma attack a rarity.
Watch Out For Irritants
The first and foremost thing that a parent must do, after his/her child is diagnosed with asthma, is that he must start maintaining a diary to identify what is actually triggering the attack in the child. It is equally important to observe what a child is doing or where he is when an attack strikes. By watching your child constantly at play, work, or elsewhere, you can succeed in identifying the triggers to the attack. This, in turn, will help you in keeping your child away from those objects or substances, limiting the possibility of an attack. After you have indentified the triggers, make a note of them and show the list to your family doctor. Such a research from your end can help the doctor a lot in identifying your child’s actual problem and thus prescribe the medicines accordingly.
Keep The Surroundings Clean
Undoubtedly, there are plenty of medicines available for asthma, but fighting this respiratory disorder has to begin from your home. Generally, asthma patients are allergic to dust and dirt, hence, make sure that your household is clean. Do not allow the furniture, clothes, bedding, or furnishings to collect dust else they may irritate your child. Prolonged exposure to an untidy environment could even cause a fatal attack. Also, refrain from smoking in your child’s presence and avoid cleaning activities such as dusting and washing in the child’s presence because you never know if dust particles or a particular chemical could irritate your child. It is a good idea to cover the mattresses with allergy-resistant plastic covers after vacuuming them thoroughly on a regular basis.
If your child is prone to severe asthmatic attacks, do not re-house pets. If at all, you must have pets, choose ones that are without fur. If you are inclined on keeping dog as a pet, seek for breeds (such as poodle) that are less likely to cause irritation to the patient. You may also use an atmosphere regulator at home to keep humidity under control, as mould could also cause severe asthma attacks.
Regular Medical Check-ups
Lastly, take your child regularly to your family doctor for regular medical check-ups. Keep instant relievers such as painkillers or inhalers handy, as per the doctor’s prescription, to minimize the pain for your child during distress. Try to keep these prescribed medicines and inhalers in as many places as possible such as in the car, house, relatives’ or neighbors’ house etc, so that you don’t have to run around to find it during any emergency.
