Asthma In Toddlers

Did you know that more and more toddlers are being diagnosed with asthma? If you do not have a young baby this may not be important to you. But if you do, or are thinking about moving in this direction, you should definitely consider this fact. When it comes down to it, diagnosing asthma at an early age is very important. This will give your baby the best chance of getting the treatment that they need to get off to a good start in life.

Asthma related issues are responsible for nearly 20 percent of emergency room visits among toddlers. As you can see, this is a huge problem, and one that is not being treated effectively. Even though doctors are doing their best to make sure that toddlers are diagnosed with this problem, it is something that seems to slip through the cracks time after time. Over the last 25 years, the number of cases of asthma in toddlers has increased by more than 100 percent. This is an astonishing number, and unfortunately, one that is still on the rise.

With this problem becoming more prominent, parents are becoming worried about a couple of things. First off, they are concerned about how asthma will affect their toddler at an early age. In other words, will this problem hold back other areas of development? Obviously, this is a huge problem that can worry new parents to no end.

Another issue that parents are concerned with is how asthma will affect not only their child during the early years, but also as they grow older. Even though asthma is a common problem in the world today, it is not something that you want your child to have. It can have negative effects on the quality of life, and this is something that needs to be discussed at an early age with your child’s doctor.

There are several ways that asthma in toddlers is diagnosed. First and foremost, it is done simply enough by observation. If parents are noticing that their baby is coughing a lot, it may be directly related to asthma. Other ways of diagnosing this issue are taking a close look at the family’s medical history, and of course a medical examination. When all of these things are put together, doctors can usually make a diagnosis.

Even though asthma in toddlers is on the rise, there are ways that this can be treated. But remember, it is essential to catch this problem early on. If you are noticing breathing or coughing issues with your baby, you will want to take him or her to the doctor right away. The earlier that asthma can be diagnosed the better for both you and your baby.
